These are auralizations created with a segment from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Can you perceive the difference in loudness?

Anechoic (Dry) Recording

Compton Verney Opera House: G(mid)= 4.9 dB

Vienna Musikvereinssaal: G(mid) = 8.8 dB

Elmia: G(mid) = 11.5 dB

Grundvigs Cathedral: G(mid) = 14.9 dB

Creating the Auralizations

The Method:

The auralizations were created using a sound source roughly in the center of each stage and a receiver positioned on the ground floor of the hall roughly in the center-right of the floor. In every hall, there is bound to be a wide range of sound pressure levels depending on one’s location within the hall. By positioning the sources and receivers at approximately equivalent places in each hall, we produced G(mid)’s that may be reasonably compared.

All auralizations created usingĀ Odeon Room Acoustics Software.
